Most western leaders condemned the unprovoked attacks, through written statements or telephone calls with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on the same day as these war crimes took place.
But not Canada. It was well into Sunday, Oct. 8, before Canada’s prime minister released a statement. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau condemned the attacks but in much more careful and restrained language than did most western leaders.
United States President Joe Biden issued a much stronger statement at 2:38 p.m. ET on Oct. 7. French President Emmanuel Macron responded with equal clarity, force and timeliness.
Perhaps more telling is what has transpired since. At the forefront of deep concern around the world was the Gaza hospital fiasco. Initial reports rushed out by some media outlets on Tuesday evening asserted that Israel had bombed a Gaza hospital, killing hundreds.
Kudos for exposing horrific truths. And revealing details. Shocking.
I appreciated your analysis of the shameful silence of the Canadian Liberal government. I hope that in one of your next posts you will also mention Jagmeet Singh's shameful comment that Israel is "sowing the seeds of genocide" in Gaza, and the sharp contrast of both Liberal and NDP statements with Pierre Poilievre's outright condemnation of Hamas and his solid support for Israel.
